Anonymous, 13 Nov 20258GB VRAM really holds it back, but perhaps it can be priced... moreNo, it's not DOA. It has plenty of RAM and VRAM given how all other current-gen consoles have only 16GB shared memory and way heavier systems consuming a lot more RAM. SteamOS can run on like half a gigabyte of RAM. Somehow millions of people are fine paying $600+ for the other consoles but want the Steam Machine to cost $300?

Also SteamOS is far from what it was 3 years ago and most games run better on it in comparison to Windows, which uses 10 times more RAM just to sit on idle without any games running.

At $500 it will sell like hot cakes. People are quoting US laptop prices on sale but 95% of the world never see such low prices, lie a 4060 laptop for 600 bucks, so a similar performing pc or laptop is like $800-900+

rizki1, 13 Nov 2025SteamOS is the weakness, not many games can be played and o... moreOver 20,000 games are rated as at least playable via Proton.

Anonymous, 13 Nov 20258GB VRAM really holds it back, but perhaps it can be priced... moreIt will be DOA anyways after the stocks clears out because of the RAM's price rise.

SteamOS is the weakness, not many games can be played and only a few online games can be played too.

8GB VRAM really holds it back, but perhaps it can be priced well, $300-400 should be pretty good. It'll be DOA at $500.

The most interesting project out of all of this is the x86-arm translation layer

Put the news about the 8gen3 vr headset.

The Steam Frame is a much bigger deal than people realise. It uses a Snapdragon chipset, and can play Steam games on the machine *without streaming*, using FEX, which is an x86-64 emulator for ARM. If they did the same thing where they forked Wine, optimised it for games and called it Proton, we might as well see the same technology come officially to the Steam app on Android.
