Until around Oct. 10, the Gemini AI assistant required the user to deliberately opt into its feature. After that date, the feature was allegedly “secretly” turned on by Google for all its users’ Gmail, Chat, and Meet accounts by default, enabling AI to track its users’ private data in those platforms “without the users’ knowledge or consent,” according to the complaint filed Nov. 11 in federal court in San Jose.

The class action lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleging that Google is violating the California Invasion of Privacy Act, a 1967 law that prohibits surreptitious wiretapping and recording of confidential communications without the consent of all parties involved.

Although Google provides a way for users to turn off the feature, it requires users to look for it in the privacy settings to deactivate it, despite never having agreed to it in the first place, the complaint said.

The AI feature is categorized in “Google Workspace smart features” in Google settings. Once turned on, it means the user consents to the program using “Workspace content and activity” across Workspace or in other Google products.

When the feature is turned on, Gemini can “scan, read, and analyze every email (and email attachment), message, and conversation on those services,” according to the complaint.

Technology writer Ruben Circelli wrote in a PCMag article that Gemini is “downright creepy” in diving deep into his personal history, analyzing 16 years’ worth of emails after he signed up for a more advanced pro feature.

In a series of tests by Circelli, Gemini told him one of his character flaws and even knew who his first crush was in elementary school.

“This invasion of privacy wasn’t just disconcerting, though; it was unexpected,” Circelli wrote.

When we are done with all these AI shit, atleast 80% of the people will be without a job.

Anonymous, 14 Nov 2025So when it goes wrong, who responsibility is to make the payment?Much as the card networks charge higher interchange fees on "card not present" transactions, I expect they'll soon change even higher fees for "human not present" transactions like these.

As long as it pays with Google's own money. So essentially buys for me as a gifts, then I'm fine with that. I'll just sell it on or return it for the money paid. As stuff chosen or purchased for me by AI will not likely meet my strict purchase review process, so will probably not be something I either want or need. I'll choose and pay for my own purchases, thank you very much...

I say it goes in the other direction buddy. Our government wants to buy AI for all their citizens. :)

This is incredible! Google knows so much about you that it will just shop for you. Man, how convenient! Who knew I liked all these Google third party vendor products!?

How soon before it starts learning how to fabricate your consent?

🤦🏻‍♂️. This AI garbage is already more then annoying.

"Agentic" is the new BS buzzword for an Ai layer smeared in between interface and user "helping" us. Sure, it's great for people with disabilities, but we all know mega corporations aren't making things out of their kindness, they're making it solely to make more money.

Unless you are a billion-dollar company, I do not see how automated purchase management would be beneficial and even then you would want a real person to be in charge instead of a computer program from an external company known for shady business practices.

But for an individual's private shopping experience, this is simply ridiculous. If it serves anyone, it's Google because they can sign contracts with certain vendors which will then be favored by the search algorithm.

But seriously now, I cannot imagine how someone has no time and courage to look on a website if a product is in stock since most online-shops show directly whether a product is available in the product's page.

If government's don't ban such abysmal ideas, then I have no hope in humanity.
