Microsoft promises super-powerful processors, better browser than Safari in future
In an interview with CNET , Microsoft’s Andy Lees, head of Windows Mobile, confessed to designing Windows Mobile for 200 Mhz processors and QVGA screens.
“We aimed to go for a lower common denominator,” Lees said.
He promised this was set to change however. In a comment that could only be hinting at support for new processors like Nvidia’s Tegra, he said “The power of the kinds of phones that come out next year will be incredible, well beyond even today’s devices. Phones next year will have dual-core processors, super-fast data connections, and graphics power rivaling that of the original Xbox.
“That’s a phenomenal thing on a phone. The phones of the future will also have location information beyond just GPS sensors. It will know where it is pointing, it will know which angle it is being held at.”
Lees promised that Microsoft would start working more closely with hardware makers. He pointed to deals late last year with LG and Samsung.
“You are going to see a bunch of announcements at Mobile World Congress but also it is going to be the beginning of a 12-, 18-month period where you are going to see a whole bunch of different stuff,” Lees said.
But Lees said that Microsoft embarked on a new strategy some time ago that will come to fruition over the next 18 months. The first steps in that strategy, he said, will be announced at the Mobile World Congress conference that takes place in Barcelona in the middle of next month.
Web browsing has also been a traditional weak spot, but Lees also promised their new offering would surpass those interfaces of other leading browsers like Safari by the end of the year.
Part of Microsoft’s new strategy, Lees said, is not relying on operating system upgrades to improve its products. The new approach, while still making money by selling a mobile operating system, places considerable focus on services that help connect the phone to the PC and Web as well as devices such as the Xbox.
Lees would not confirm details of a rumored rival to Apple’s App Store, reportedly known as SkyMarket.
“There is some question whether we can more directly connect the developer and the end user,” he said. “We’re looking at that.”
While the wait for these supposed revolutionary updates is still likely to be long, we should start seeing the seeds of these in less than 3 weeks at Mobile World Congress. Whether these stop gap measures will be enough to maintain Windows Mobile market share in the interim remains to be seen, but the recent Q4 success should point towards the game being far from over.

Motorola to “continue to focus on Windows Mobile” - the roller coaster continues
Responding to persistent rumours that Motorola is stopping Windows Mobile development, underlined by the recent laying off of 77 people at its Plantation Windows Mobile facility, Motorola has again issued an official denial.
Maya Komadina, a Motorola spokeswoman said, despite speculation that the layoffs indicate a decision to cut Windows Mobile, Motorola is still supporting the operating system, she said. “It is important to note that Motorola’s strategy for the Mobile Devices business has not changed — we continue to focus on Windows Mobile as one of our software platforms, and there are teams working on Windows Mobile development at other facilities,” she said.
On Friday, Motorola disclosed that among the 3,000 people it is laying off in its mobile devices division are 77 people working in its Plantation, Florida, facility. Those workers are involved in Windows Mobile development, said .
In October, Sanjay Jha, co-CEO of Motorola and CEO of the handset division, said that the company would focus on Android and Windows Mobile phones, cutting the rest of the operating system platforms that the company has supported. But as the company’s handset division continues to struggle, onlookers are watching for signs of other changes in the business strategy.
Motorola has historically spread itself too thin by supporting practically every OS out there, said Jack Gold, analyst at J. Gold Associates. Paring down to Android and Windows Mobile makes sense, he said. Windows Mobile lets Motorola target the enterprise and is also the basis for many devices made by Symbol, the Motorola group that makes devices like handheld barcode scanners for vertical markets.
We will continue to keep an eye on this story, but I have a feeling the only way this story will be laid to rest if Motorola releases an amazing Windows Mobile device, and while the MotoSurf A3100 is nice, it is not that.

Firefox Mobile coming to the HTC Touch Pro next week?
WMExperts reports that Mozilla is close to releasing a first public release of the Fennec, the Firefox Mobile browser, on the Windows Mobile platform.
According the the notes from their weekly meeting, the release is just awaiting the code being signed of by one or two members of the team.
We are targeting a Milestone release for the first week of February, targeting the HTC touch pro.
We are two patches away from the meta goal of building from trunk. The tools changes have review from dougt, and are waiting for review from ted, who has promised review by the end of the week. NSPR changes are waiting for review from Nelson, who asked for and received a patch against NSPR trunk
Its likely the release will be far from bug-free and polished, but progress seems to be occurring apace, and we will hopefully soon have another contender in the now crowded Windows Mobile browser space.

haha... keep dreaming about SE & symbie...
new old news:
Samsung, Nokia, and LG all reported heavy fourth quarter losses last week, with Samsung reporting its first quarterly loss in 8 years. Samsung lost $14.4 million for the 2008 quarter that ended December 31st. LG posted a staggering loss for the same period of $487 million and predicts continued losses all through 2009. Nokia saw fourth quarter 2008 profit fall 69%, down to $743.62 million from $2.39 billion for the fourth quarter in 2007.
Cell phone manufacturers and service providers are struggling with a severe downturn in the global economy that has caused consumers to pull back, and holding off upgrading to the hottest new phone is apparently one of the first cuts Americans are making. While sales fell all around, the market has recently seen dramatic declines in land line use in favor of cell phone service only. The credit crunch has also impacted cell phone manufacturers and service providers, with increasing numbers of credit card defaults making it harder to find viable new customers.

Any company can assemble a computer easily; likewise any mobile company can easily assemble a smart phone.
But very difficult thing is Design. Xperia designed by SE. Only HTC assembled it. Why SE given assemble X1 to HTC. Because they need to outsource some work to cost cut.
Why HTC can’t design a really good phone like Xperia?
X1 designed by SE
X1 parts manufactured by Sony (Only processor manufactured by Qualcomm)
Most of HTC phone parts like speakers, cameras are manufactured by Sony
X1 software written by SE
