DD: i don't buy this BS that it is hard to keep track of Samsung phones! when they come out with a phone...you have sites like...(duh!) gsmarena to help you check specs and all. if it's to your liking, then buy it. if not, wait for the best one for you. that is why they dish out gazillions of models. it is to target every niche. or maybe they have way too much money than what they know to do with.

But honestly, most manufactors need to sort out their portfolio, in particular samsung.
Too many models, that you simply cant keep track of.
And where is the real variations?
Pretty much no qwerty-, flip-, slide-, numpad- phones worth mentioning during 2013.
And really samsung should have realized that they need to update their top model twice per year (they saw the results in 2013 when S4 didnt sell as well as they expected, ans seriously, apple might be able to keep to one model a year, but it makes no sense that it actually works). One top end early in the year to swing back after the slowdown after the holiday season. And one, that is up to date by the time holiday season comes.
Sure, that would probably hurt the Note line, as the S line would have a top end version, even during second half of the year.
But many bought the Note, that wasnt really for them, just cause it was the latest and greatest, that can hurt the brand in the long run when people end up with devices that wasnt really what they were looking for.
Twice a year updates fits many mobile lines.
Release the high end Phablet and Minis at the same events twice a year, and the real high end device at separate events (that way phablets and minis will not steal attention from the real high end device that sits right between in terms of screen size, and those can have the same basic hardware inside, but with a later release, not to steal the show later on either). And during those event, update the whole model line, even the budget, mid-ranger. That way they could sort out the model names, in a way that it would be possible to keep track of the devices.
And use smart namings, like adding xs-xl to a name to tell the screen size, that way the same basic hardware can be used in serveral of models, with the size-description it would be easy to tell them apart. (in the ultra budget line, for example, there would probably only be models in the xs-m sizes, in the midrange s-xl, and the top end, probably m-xl).
And most of those real variations i mention, would only come in one screen size, per price segment, so they can have their own monicker. And many of them are restricted to certain segments. You cant really do a flip high end phone, the screen will be to small, but you could make a mid range one or at least higher end budget one. A side-slide-qwerty could be at any price range. Numpad phones could probably only fit ultra budget and budget lines, as the screen would feel way to small for any more advanced hardware inside.
What also needs to happen is more semi premium brands (apple terretory), but I mean brands, and not just a line under same old brands. Sure samsung, Sony, LG could do those devies, but they should do them under a separate brand name. You really cant wash the budget out of the Samsung brand name, since they cant stop doing budget products, and the same is true for LG and Sony as well. A semi premium brand can keep the models down to a minimum (just like apple, but seriously no semi premium brand will be able to sell anywhere near what apple does), the hardware doesnt always have to be the latest and greatest, and design and build quality can take first seat.

The LG Mobile Communications Company reported a 29 percent increase in annual revenues to KRW 12.97 trillion (USD 11.85 billion) year-on-year and an 18 percent increase in fourth-quarter revenues to 3.59 trillion (USD 3.38 billion) quarter-on-quarter with help from stronger LTE smartphone sales such as G2 and Nexus 5. Smartphone shipments of 13.2 million units represented an increase of 54 percent from the previous year. The positive impact of improved product mix was offset by higher marketing investments to strengthen LG’s brand equity and intensified price competition.
GOOD JOB LG!

Samsung is selling almost there times more than Apple but apple earns more than Samsung . It is interesting that Apple
is selling phones in really higher price than actual price. Apple's phones are made by different companies such as Samsung, lg , Sony , Sharp , Toshiba etc . And bill of materials (BOM) is just around $250 so why actual price of iphone is sooooo expensive ? I think Apple is just cheating people giving just ios software. Android phones are cheap because they get free software from Google and hardware is better than Apple. I think Chinese and Indian companies will overtake Apple and Samsung soon because their phones are good and reasonable in price.

I'm just wondering how many people purchased Samsung phones during 2012/2013. They talk about how many units were sold, but not to how many people. Were they purchased to replace a faulty phone (Samsung or any other brand)? Was it as an upgrade on an existing Samsung? How many of these units were sold to new Samsung clients?

One of the major reason why Sammy leads the show is probably because it is the only brand that has a phone from INR4500 to INR50000 and thus gives every strata of people a taste of branded smartphone (sorry I don't consider Micromax, Lava, Karbonn as a real brand...)

Am not surprised. Samsung doesn't limit it's thoughts within d box, it Goes outside d box and even beyond. It is truly an innovative company.
