I do love the concept of assembling a smartphone myself, but I also think the the manufacturers will end up like PC parts manufacturers. Only geeks have heard of companies such as Gigabyte, Corsair, Thermaltake etc. lol

Only geeks like us will know about what this Project Ara might turn out to be.

Kind of a dumb project, there will at most 2-3 optimum configurations, which is roughly the same number of variants of any model these days anyway, so all this superfluous 'parts' is cool as a concept and that's it. Will probably end up in more wastage, defeating the purpose of the project.

I'm skeptical about the success of this concept for smartphones. DIY is widely available in computers for years but how many people actually do it?! I'm probably one of a small number of people who love assembling their own computers LOL!

For the vast majority of buyers, they want to use immediately what they buy not spend time assembling it. Most buyers are not tech savvy either so giving them this added layer of choosing complicates matters for them. Even putting the burden on the seller for putting together the chosen phone parts would require additional personnel and eat through their profits.

It's nice on paper but I don't see much practical sense in this project.

In its current form, I'm highly critical of project Ara's success. We already have the concept of modularity in PCs, but that is only a small part of the market. This is because of compatibility issues with motherboard, processor, RAM, power supply. Anyone who has assembled a Computer knows this well. That's just a few, and a Smartphone has lot more components, and if they are going to break it into all those parts, it will be complete confusion for customers. Besides, you'll breaking the app ecosystem, if people can build their phones without GPS, Accelerometer, Wi-Fi etc.

So, I think it should only be broken down to Display, Motherboard with SoC, Camera, Case and Battery for practicality.

Yay, this might become the first PC like phone, replaceable parts is always a welcome bonus.
