Samsung in Barcelona: Omnia HD and the gang, touch and OLED aplenty

16 Feb, 2009
Samsung dropped a whole bunch of devices here in Barcelona and while some of them were known for being quite unable to stay put, the high-end of the batch still managed...

i better prefer this phone rather than n97 you know what do i prefer this phone than your junk n97? its because of some features of n97 that is being left by the innovation these days! for example: many phones have higher megapixel than this one, 8mp 12mp or sooner it will be 20MP!!! but this, 5MP! HAHAHA that is so-so even cheap immitated china product can do that(even 8MP TOO) and that virtual qwerty, so out of the hood! many phones have qwerty in touchscreens, and don`t forget handwriting functioalaity, AND MANY phones have WINMO OS in their phone, and my conclusions for this phone: SUPER JUNK PHONE!

Anonymous, 17 Feb 2009Oh come off it! This i8910 is nothing but a poser's paradis... moreYour comments are ridiculously one-sided. Though YOU might find a hardware keyboard essential, don't conclude that everyone does. I personally type much faster on a standard alphanumeric keypad, touchscreen or not. The TYTN keyboard was far to small for an adult to use pratically. And I've yet to find at hardware keyboard large enough to allow touch-typing.

I do agree that the camera is not pratical. Though to be honest, I've yet to find much to beat the Innov8 for camera based smart phones.

By biggest concern with this handset is the move to symbian. The nice thing about the omnia was the combination of flexibile processing power, provided by windows, and the more user-friendly samsung overlays. With HTC becoming a real brand in the UK, awareness of windows mobile is on the up. A move to symbian just seems a move in the wrong direction.

These numbers clearly shows that Nokia has been loosing ground all last year. Imagine what will happen this year, when now the difference between Nokia and Samsung products are this big! Last year Nokia lost 2% and Samsung gained 4%. I am sure that this year Nokia will loose at least 10%! And Samsung gain another 5-6 at least.

                  Nokia is going down!

Anonymous, 17 Feb 2009So,is there any solutions from nokia? I don't think so..coz... moreOh come off it! This i8910 is nothing but a poser's paradise. It is not a practical solution. There is no hardware QWERTY which is essential for serious work. There are serious questions about the fps in the camcording. It is below par. The 8MP stills cam will not make a discernible difference on a phone screen or regular sized prints. There is no Xenon flash so it is not a true cameraphone. Essentially we have an impractical device. A unit designed for people to say "wow" without checking the substance. Alright! Let me join you: "wow"... I've said it! Are you satisfied? Guess what?... I'm not buying it! I'll go for Nokia's N97. Obviously it is the practical solution. Let me give you guys a tip. When buying one of these mini-phone computers- I like to call them multifunctional devices (MFD)-look for the hardware keyboard. If it is not there, conclude that posing has been placed before pragmatism.

Anonymous, 17 Feb 2009How the cheap asian brand could be the king??????????I beg to differ. Samsung is the world largest electronics company . Wiki that. And it is also the onli 3 electronics company to post revenue in exceeding USD 100 billion. The other 2 goes to HP and Siemens. Samsung is so powerful it does not borrow to invest, it is virtually debt free and sitting comfortably with more than USD 5 billion in cash. Now compare to your western company, how much financial leverage are they relying on.

Let us all calm down and look at the facts. The flagship of Samsung is the i8910, yet there are a few problems. Look! anyone who wants to do some serious work will need a hardware QWERTY. Screen QWERTYs are not as fast or responsive; and in hot countries sweat and grease is left all over the screen. The option of a hardware QWERTY should be there. Kudos to Nokia N97 for giving us a choice!
My second point is that 8MP on a phone will be hard to distinguish from 5MP. Phone screens are small and most people don't print photos larger than 6*4 inches. Look! 8MP becomes useful if you are printing to poster size. When buying a phone one must distinguish between purpose and posing.
The i8910 claims to sport HD recording. I noticed it is only at 24fps. This is too slow a frame rate. Let us hope this phone doesn't skip frames like a ten year old girl skips a rope!
The screen res is not high enough for such a large screen. Most people will watch their high def recorded video ON THE PHONE. Therefore Samsung should have ensured that they implemented a high res screen. Will Samsung dare put a 1280*720 pixel screen in this phone? I don't think so!
