Too bad Xiaomi doesn't sell globally, else they may be a serious contender to the rest.

Of course they made a huge hit on smartphone market, they sell the cheapest top notch smartphones.
But wait, why haven't all the other 1000 chinese smartphone makers come to such a huge market share?!
      That's easy!
They first saw the potential of custom ROMs (CyanogenMod) and made a more beautiful fork out of it and not just use AOSP with few minor modifications.
      Oppo is also using CyanogenMod!
If Oppo plays their cards right, Oppo will be the next big thing.
Long live custom roms on XDA! :D

The article is titled Xiaomi beats out Apple in China, ranks 3rd in country"
and not whether logic can afford sapphire coating

The people in China buying Xiaomi phones are doing so because like logic has said it is a higher specification than that of the latest iPhone the IP5S.

For the price of an iPhone TWO or even three? Xiaomi can ve bought

The choice is spend less and get a HIGHER spec phone which is comparable to say the S4 or S5 or choose as stated a premium 2011 handset

I get ghe point that sapphire costs say 5 times the cost of gorilla glass which if Xiaomi decided to use it the handset would cost $15 instead of $3

It is sites like this that help those with finite fund make a choice

Ask anybody and most would pick the iPhone over Xiaomi put side by side then they can seewhere the extra huhundreds of dollars are going.

It could be the high cost of the flagship Samsung and Iphone that Xiaomi has is pushing to be number one by offering really high spec phones at really affordable prices

If I can't get the very best I will get the best alternative.

If Xiaomi handset matched Iphone this would not be an issue or iphoes price was that of s Duel Core so less than the cost of Xiaomi Apple would not be challenged

iPhones are expensive whether on contract or off contract and every single iPhone costs more than its predecessor.

The IPhone6 will cost more than the IP5S AND as pointed out Apple has a strict markup

This can be seen in the case of the IP5C whoee sales were not as expected. Instead of reducing the price to stimulate sales Apple also halfed the phone memory to 8Gb which is the only 4G LTE phone that is under 16Gb

So yes the IP5C is costs less but profit margins have been maintained.

Only monopoly markets can prices go up an up and the phone market is not a monopoly

Logic, 08 May 2014It is NOT about profit but market share The more phones ... moreSorry to hear you cant afford a few dollars more for sapphire.

But wait, most iPhones are bought on contract, they dont cost much at all, you can even get them for free.

I think you are just jealous to the sapphire glass, are you afraid Samsung will never have it? Its strange that Android fans need all the best specs, they even complained that S801 isnt good enough, they need better, only the S805 will do, oh yes. But when its about front glass then suddenly you dont need the best, just because it was from the wrong company? Thats pathetic, really.

Apple cares about profits, not market share.
They don't even cover all the markets ....

Market share discussions are just for Android supporters that want to demonstrate their "superiority". Apple doesn't want to cover every segment, because they want to guarantee a specific user experience and maintain a specific profits level.

If Apple pulled their fingers out and sold budget priced handsets in the 100-200 range that market share would only increase for them.Having said that the Xiami mi3 is a piece of marvel

Even xiaomi can beat apple in china, the reason? apple prices and the number to competing companys.

Angry Mobile Nerd, 08 May 2014The thing that bothers me about the Chinese buying iPhones ... moreWhat is there to appreciate? The GRPS/EDGE speeds they get with their iPhone on China Mobile because the phone doesn't support the 3G or 4G networks?

It's just for status, it's not working especially good (now there is an iPhone that supports China Mobile networks but it can only be bought with a subscription, which many Chinese doesn't want).

The more phones the competition sell the MORE profit Apple loses as afik it has the largest profit mark up of any phone maker

The other factor is specs, iPhones are now in the 4Th year of dual core since 2011 and only offering a 8Mp camera but despite that are the most expensive brand.

If I remember my specs the iPhone5S flagship is Metallic Samsung Galaxy S2

It seems that the realisation why pay more and by more a lot more for old 2011 specs

Even Samsung are offering Quad core and 16MP camera

in order to make a profit you have to generate sales, so each item NOT sold hits your profit

The iphone6 will have sapphire coating which is $15 per iPhone compared to $3 gorilla glass,
Whatever the cost finally are the iPhone6 will cost considerably more than the iPhone5S

Apple is driven largely by profit and their profits are generally good and improving regardless of market share, so regardless of market share, they would not be worried.

Samsung, have large profits due to market share, as their product is the same as the competition, differentiated only by hardware, with similar margins as their competitors, by virtue of being an Android manufacturer. Less market share = Less profit.

The conclusion here is that news of Xiaomi eating up market share, would be worrying news for Samsung (as well as other Android manufacturers).

Add the numbers. Total Android penetration is.. 51%. Just with those. Without the mom and pop brands.
