UMTS is limited to 385kbps itself.

I'm no expert in cellular network protocols, but with the info you've provided, and some digging my friend and I did, here's the following:
Your phone model specifications for the two 3G variants have "UMTS/HSPA+" clubbed together.
This is like clubbing "GPRS/EDGE" together, HSPA+ is just a tweaked, upgraded UMTS. EDGE's reference as 2.5G is as GPRS's 2G. UMTS is 3G and one might think HSPA+ would be 3.5G, and it should be, but then there's HSPA, and moreover we have good-old American marketing. Here's the story:
In early 2010s the American customer was tired of being a generation of technology behind the far east, LTE and WiMAX were being deployed in Korean and Japanese cities while some American neighborhoods still crawled on EDGE. The market was not truly sure whether LTE or WiMAX would be the next standard. The carriers were in a tough spot, and they didn't like the risk involved with any sort of investment what-so-ever, so they just lied, sort of. Nomenclature of network generations is not regulated. The easy way out is upgrade UMTS to HSPA+ at a shallow cost, and call it 4G, they could have called it 5G or 17G or 1776G, because no one can litigate on this basis, a generation is a marketing tool. When it was clear that LTE would out-survive(becoz of Evolution) WiMAX, the transition was made, a marketing term 4G LTE was invented so that the press(YouTube reviewers) doesn't understand the deal with 4G as in HSPA+ and everything is under the sun.

In short: if GPRS is 2G, EDGE is 2.5G, then UMTS is 3G and HSPA+ is 3.5G
The 4G LTE model supports UMTS on a bunch of bands. You'd still have 3G in India, it'd be the 3G that the Japanese used in the late 90s, but then even Bieber is better then EDGE.
All the above is true except if UMTS (850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz) is meant to be for WCDMA, which changes everything.
The real question is: Is 4G LTE and an SD Card slot worth $40(22% of original value)? If you are in America, the answer is simply NO, but if you are traveling outside the US with this phone, it is, because its the only option if you want 3G on both 1700 and 2100 MHz, and you hate Bieber(which means you'd definitely hate EDGE).
Do remember, this explanation is simple because it is simplified.

The Moto G has the following variants available:

                    1) US GSM Model:
                    GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
                    UMTS/HSPA+ up to 21 Mbps (850, 1700 (AWS), 1900 MHz)

                    2) Global GSM Model:
                    GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
                    UMTS/HSPA+ up to 21 Mbps (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)
Requires a microSIM card (not included)

                    3) 4G LTE Model:
                    4G LTE Bands 2, 4, 5, 17 (1900, 1700, 850, 700 MHz)
                    GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
                    UMTS (850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz)

Here's the catch, Indian carriers offer 3G on 2100Mhz bands only, so if one buys the 4G LTE model, there'll be not HSPA/HSPA+ support, EDGE/GPRS would be the only data carrier until 4G LTE arrives, and on the given specific bands.

Someone please verify, I'd love to be wrong.
