Multi-touch coming to for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, sort of

13 April, 2009
Thanks to the efforts of an ingenious third-party developer users will be able to enjoy multi-touch capabilities on the Symbian S60 5th, which originally lacks those. Starting off with a simple touch game...

i have a tube. the simplest way to see how a resistive screen handles multitouch is to have a drawing program installed and,.. test it till a pattern emerge. the physics behind it is a bit more complicated but is not impossible.

the main challenge is (i think) to calculate the the second fingers position based upon the first and the "midpoint". and that is because resistives are pressure sensitive.

but gestures should be easy to "replicate" or should i say invent. for example the concurrent pressures between the 2 fingers may be useful.

The article says nothing about what it means or how it will be implemented, it merely assumes that every human being understands "multi-touch".

I can figure out by the title that it involves two fingers or more, but how exactly does it benefit me?

Hi. I think that think that nokia made 5800 as an iphone killer is bullshit specially when you know that it is their fist touch phone and lacks in a few tings for make it fulfiled . I like nokia phones specilly Nseries and sony ericsson uiq series . They always make a new technologic standart like nokia n95 and sony ericsson G900 or W960 for example and then other manufacturers make their own copies . Iphone is not the best phone on earth a lacks a lot of basics functions well known.touch phones as very old and only because iphone has a multitouch screen it is the best. No it is not like that multi or not multitouch nokia 5800 offers its onw system and functions and thats that stop it. By the way nokia offers symbian that has many fans and thirt party apps.

I've known that resistive touch phones could do multitouch, but I've never seen it in action. I'm impressed, although I don't know if this capability will really help the 5800 very much. Resistive technology is on its way out, as it should be, its quite old, glitchy, scratches the screen, and not as fluid as people would like (when compared to capacitive touch phones). One advantage (and only one) is that it can be used with gloves on, this might make a big difference if you live in New York or Antarctica or something, but other than that it shouldn't even exist given the presence of capacitive touch.

And the reason people put this phone up against the Iphone is because it was marketed AS an Iphone killer. So far there have been like 4 distinct phones that have been released under that label, and all of them have drifted into nothingness (at least the hype is all but gone). I feel that it is Palm's Pre that will perhaps give the Iphone a run for its money, and I'm excited to see what will happen upon its release between the 2 companies.

It is when you can use more than surface area on the touchscreen to manipulate information.

For example on the iphone you pull two fingers towards each other to zoom in, in apps such as google earth and picture gallery (i think, i don't own one).

                                    : )

Iphone is a good phone, but Nokia 5800 is a different phone. We aren't asking Steve Job why the Iphone 3G only got a 2MP Camera when some phones have like 10MP+ Cameraphones with FLASH. We aren't gonna asking why the Iphone's battery is so poor. Why can't it do Copy and paste when NUMERIC phones could do it years ago?
