I hope this is true. More MP doesn't equal better images at this level.

For those of you who moan about photo quality...get a life and DSLR...if you are serious about photography, you should know better. These smartphones, whatever the brand, never advertised that they are out to replace a proper camera be it a point and shoot or a DSLR...they are just giving you the convenience of having a camera on hand when you did not plan on having one and they do take decent photos.

FreezeGame, 26 Jun 2014None of the rumors regarding the Galaxy Note 4 seem to be a... moreAbout OIS, for OIS to really pay off you need to pair that up with a good camera unit. A good unit being larger sensor with larger per pixel size and good base optics. Putting OIS on puny sensors just yields steady looking smudge shots. For raw IMQ the sensor has to be robust.

Sadly the LG G3 used it's OIS more on the marketing side. They could have done a lot more in terms of sensor size and software. G3's camera is case of wasted potential. They paid more attention on the screen and just trumpet about "OIS+" and "laser auto focus" which is really nothing more than IR based distance ranging. While all of ghat is good their paired it up with poor lens unit and old lackluster sensor.

Similarly while the Z2 is very very good, I used it myself and played a lot with it for a week, they could have stuck a 13MP ~1/2.3" sensor instead of the 20.7" sensor and gotten even better low light and general day light performance. The 20.7 MP shots are not really anything to write home about, they are decent and that's about it. At those sizes you need a proper DLSR to make such large shots worth the effort.

These specs wars must end for the sake of better IMQ but such pleas are going to fall on deaf ears as we know all too well.

None of the rumors regarding the Galaxy Note 4 seem to be accurate. All we have are screencaps of fake AnTuTu entries and a bunch of columnist around the world who think they're in the know. Sadly, they're not any more informed than their readers or the rumors they write about.

Only the 5433/805 SoC's and QHD resolution appear to be solid info. The 5.7 inch display and 12MP camera are doubtful. And while 3GB of RAM is a possibility, Samsung's own 4GB LPDDR4 is feasible as well.

With Samsung wanting to make a strong statement with the Note 4, expect just about everything to be better. Improving only the chipset and resolution isn't nearly enough for their most robust flagship.

And as fantastic as the Note 3's camera/sensor is, I'd rather Samsung improve upon it instead. OIS is definitely a welcomed addition, but image quality is first and foremost.

Besides, smartphone cameras with OIS don't always produce the best overall results.

Anonymous, 26 Jun 2014What is Samsung trying to underwhelm us? If yes they are on... moreOn puny sensors found on phones Image quality matters not MPs even the Lumia 1020 full resolution shots are nothing to brag about as there is noise and lots of artifacts but the over-sampled pictures are what makes such phones shine.

The easiest way for OEMs to rival that is to keep the MPix between 10-13MP and increase the size of the sensor thereby increasing per pixel size allowing better light capture and reduced noise at higher ISOs. You are never going to get DSLR quality on a smartphone sensor. Even the PV808 couldn't do it. It's physics and limits governed by such fundamentals.

But that is not to say the situation with camera tech can't improved. Instead of running behind pleasing aesthetics they should concentrate on the core experience. Higher number Spec wars are for the clueless.

I for one doubt Samsung really cares to think along the lines of actually trying to compete with what Nokia have done they are only interested in playing the pointless MPix game so I do expect them to stick with 16MP minimum or go upwards towards 20MP offering nothing in terms of improvement or progress because lots of clueless will buy it up anyway just looking at spec numbers.

The minimum will be 16 mega pixel.

As much as it would great to have a larger sensor based 12MP camera, who are we kidding here? The Korean firms are obsessed with spec wars. This news has to be a dud. It will either be 16MP or even higher with on a relatively small sized sensor.

4K and 8K TVs are 8MP and 32MP resp. leaving pictures of 12MP, 16MP or 20MP pictures in between. Increasing number of pixels is fine until picture noise becomes too noticeable in pictures of ordinary low light. Storage space is starting to matter too in particular if in the cloud.

well common sense says put the same camera that S5 has. as that is awesome, and perfectly adequate.

12mp is pretty much adequate in terms of resolution. And if the sensor's physical size is at least the same as that of the S5's, then its still a winner for me.

Anonymous, 26 Jun 2014Sony Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact and Z2 already have 1/2.3" ... moreSony's per pixel size is the same 1.12um range because they are packing more pixels in the 1/2.3" die space. If Samsung makes a 12MP 1/2.3" sensor it will do much better in all lighting conditions as it can capture more light per pixel with sizes well in excess of 1.12um that most sensors have. Low light which is still a weakness for the Samsung line up will improve a lot.

Other than pixel peeping not much use for shots larger than 8MP so 12MP is already good provided they increase sensor size to make good use of the 12MP. Larger shots matter on something like L1020 where you can get RAW or DNG and post-process the shots yourself if you are a Pro or something.
