Have been buying Canon cameras since 2010, for our family.
2010 - Canon SX210
2011 - Canon EOS 1000D/Rebel
2012 - A1300 A birthday gift to our youngest son.
2013 - A Fujifilm FinePix XF1
But this is enough, no more Canon products in our home. The replacement for the aging EOS 1000D will not be from Canon.

This just gives more credence to what some had suspected. Microsoft haven't gotten hold or didn't bother buying/licensing pureview tech for the long term. This must be still a Nokia IP that could may well end up in the hands of any Android OEM who wishes to license it once MS's privilege has expired.
Cannon deal IF it pertains to imaging tech almost certainly means Nokia's pureview is getting phased out. That's great for Windows platform but maybe also for Android. The big OEMs like Sony, Samsung, LG are too egoistical to take Nokia's tech since they want to push their own and don't want to be seen as weak but we could expect some of the Chinese OEMs to show interest. Maybe even HTC.
Lots of interesting possibilities 'IF' MS is going Canon for imaging tech.

Canon is good, but Nikon is the best. Hopefully Google or some OEM that produces Android smartphones strike a deal with Nikon. I want a decent camera phone on Android for once. Windows phones shouldn't be the only option.

Adding raw support, manual controls, VR, nikkor glass, cross focus points, selectable low pass filter, interchangeable lenses, compact optical zoom, decent water proofing, slim line shock proofing, 15 fps with auto focus and amazing low light capabilities that nikon have managed to gain from the sony sensors they use. There is plenty the smartphone world can learn from camera companies.

This can only be a good thing - I have been very impressed with WP - looking forward to 8.1 and Cortana - a link up with cannon is probably gonna result in Nokia having a reputation for best camera - clever branding

First, its not WM or windows mobile. Its WP8.1 or windows phone 8.1.
Second, you are obviously a troll or an idiot.
Third, android truly is the best....for lag/stutter/force close. The smoothness of WP makes up for it's shortcomings.
Fourth, No WP is not for people who can hardly dial a number or cannot use a phone. I can literally use any phone existing and still chose a Lumia. So your points are invalid. Try submitting a whortwhile argument next time.

Are the patents even relating to capturing images? Canon could very well have other patents, cause cameras is not all they do.
MS is serious about imaging.
And Canon could have seen their chance of making an android device, without having to actually pay licensing fees, like other android OEMs.
Cause if canon was going to use WP, they would get that for free from MS anyhow, and thus not need patent deals.
I have a hard time seeing any releavant devices coming out of this. Canon could think they need to get in to the mobile business, but they would most likely fail.
And any collaboration, would just be a benchmark product, and the product itself would not really matter, it would be more about getting others to follow.
Ok, perhaps, it's about canon making their own smart OS, meant for cameras, and needs to get access to some patents in order to make it happen. Neither Android nor WP is a smart choice for a serious camera. And in a few years, the market will pretty much only be serious cameras of mobile imaging so getting in to the smart camera business wont help canon.

Got to use a Windows Phone the other day in detail. Could not work it out, massive number of UX mistakes, and I'm a geek! Canon are bonkers. But I guess a cheque from MS will convince them, this has always been the MS strategy. If we're not cool enough to attract partners, we'll bribe them! (A contrast to Apple, whose partners pay them!)
