One of the reasons of the low popularity is the lack of support for basic things like maps and the crappy built-in browser.

Windows Phone is using HERE maps which has absolutely no coverage for Japan.
Entire cities are mapped with just a couple of roads, no buildings and no landmarks.
Bing Maps are disabled and you gotta jump thru some serious hoops just to get it back with some third party apps, and you can forget things like bookmarking and direction.

The browser (IE) is rather questionable, if you go to maps.google.com or even www.bing.com/maps/ the pinch gesture takes you someplace else, not where you are actually zooming.
The browser is choppy and responds really slow, on Safari (iPhone) for example, www.bing.com/maps/ performs like a native app.

Kinda hard to sell such a phone where even the cheapest GPS has the correct number of lanes painted at each intersection.

Don't forget,Microsoft is that kind of company which has never showed the best devices since the beggining, but keeps improving them by time..So i have no doubt Microsoft will rule the smartphones market in a few years, just like they did with computers market many years ago

If Microsoft can make deals with japanese game developer such as Nintendo, Sega, to make exclusive games for WP 8.1 then there's hope. Otherwise they don't stand a chance.

Japanese people are mostly smart and artistic. The smart one usually goes with Android, while artistic one goes with Apple. Windows Phone and Blackberry don't fit in either category.

I assume it is important to ask ourselves who these 60 people really are. There is a pretty good chance that they own half of Japan's economy (Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, Nissan, Toyota etc.). So you see, mobile expo is the best way to present the OS to drive all future electronics (wearables, home appliances, vehicles). Microsoft is slowly but surely aiming at technological singularity. They used to do the same since Win XP but the mobile trend fractured the market and MS is trying to fix that.

The japanese market is ruled by Apple. iPhones, iPads, iMacs and Macbooks are prefered over every other brand products and their own SONY, JVC, Panasonic etc, cannot compete with Apple. Even Google is having difficult time there with Android. So goooooooood luck Microsoft/Nokia.

Anonymous, 06 Jul 2014Lumia 930 is outdated ?? hahahahhahaahaYes it is. Still on a Snapdragon 800? Only 2GB and no SD card? That's so last year and we are already at the second half of 2014. Nokia is reusing the same old hardware for "newer" flagships. Don't tell me because Windows Phone is not power hungry and run well on low specs than Android, because if it is a flagship, the phone has to have the latest hardware with it.

If Microsoft want to succeed in Japan they should joint venture with Sony and give us some phones that can really compete with Apple / Android. Nokia need to give us a Note like phone to show us winphones true capabilities.

Well back in the days Nokia wasnt really that much of a hit in Japan. Their version of symbian failed to compete with that of Japan's. But its interesting now that the playing field seems to have even out with android and ios

Does owning the most powerful engine means you have the fastest car?
I would agree that offering 60 places does not sound all too convincing to gain market share in Japan.
Then again, at least they are making a start because the brand presence is certainly very weak in Japan.
