In the UK, for the average price and package of a flagship phone, you will be looking at paying around £35 - £40 per month, it will include Unlimited Calls/Text and 2GB Internet. 4G is free on all tariffs around that price but only available in certain areas.

Cricket Wireless (uses AT&T's network) is $50/month for 2.5gb data and unlimited calls/texts. And if you sign up for autopay the price drops to $45/month. Net10, Straight Talk & T-Mobile have decently priced prepaid plans as well. I'd stay away from Sprint, Boost & Virgin though. There's a reason why they're the cheapest - very poor cell coverage. Which may have gotten better if that #@$% merger had gone through!

how much are usa contracts and sim free plans? (we can get 400-600 mins unlimited texts and data for around 20-25dollars per month sim only, and same on contract with a high end phone for 35-40)

Wonderful news. Sprint is terrible. Worst coverage and slowest data speed by far.

This is terrible news for consumers. Conventional wisdom says more carriers equals more competition equals costs going down. But in the U.S. AT&T and Verizon have a near monopoly on our mobile infrastructure, so more carriers doesn't mean squat for consumers. The Big Two own most of the towers. A combined Sprint/T-Mobile superpower MAYBE had a sliver of a chance of challenging the Big Two, bringing down prices for all of us. Oh well, sad day for U.S. wireless customers. RIP merger.

Especially adding in the cost of data....$50-$100 for a few gigs of data!!!??? And it's not even theirs...you just get charged that as a fee for them to connect you to the data.

My impression is that the Americans are paying way too much for their mobile communications. The best for them would be if Iliad buys t-mobile to bring down the prices as they did both in the fixed and the mobile market in France.
