18 September, 2014
Starting next month, you won't need an invite to buy the self-proclaimed "flagship killer" phone.

So after the whole invite system, that was supposed to avoid the mess of pre-orders and runs on stock, but which turned out to be super annoying in its own way, now there's going to be pre-orders anyway? Wow, they've managed to make the roll out super annoying in not just the usual way, but in multiple different ways. Yay, worst of both worlds!

Besides which, who ever heard of pre-orders months after a phone was released? Totally ridiculous.

Then there was all that early promising about how small the phone was going to be, despite having a 5.5" screen, but it actually turned out to be a huge phablet that's bigger than other phones in its category (and was quickly upstaged by the LG G3 that really did manage to fit a 5.5" screen in significantly smaller body).

After that there was the recent cancelling of the option for custom backs, made of wood and different materials, just as the new, nearly as inexpensive Moto X comes out with all those sorts of customization options.

I just don't trust this company anymore to be honest about their product or to keep promises.

Everyone likes to go on about how great the price is, but price isn't everything. For those in the market for a flagship, there are many attractive options out there (especially if you don't want a phablet). If you can afford the alternative (which apparently millions of people can) the OnePlus One is no flagship killer. I'd say for those who would have otherwise bought a mid-range phone, it's a nice alternative (phablet-ness notwithstanding). In the end, that makes the OnePlus One more of a mid-range killer.

'flagship killer' is a description of the week for ANY phone these days. There are 3-4 phones already released with specs equivalent or greater than this 'flagship killer', and those brand-name manufacturers don't make you wait on a waiting list for months to receive a phone.. unless you're a gullible Apple user.

The only legitimate use of this description today is if someone releases a modular, hardware-upgradable phone.

It is available to buy immediately from a company in Europe but it seems we aren't allowed to post comments which tell you where you can buy it. Odd really.
