So it turns out, I'm really not as much of a techie, as I thought I was - smarter than the average bear, but still, haha! :p

    1. Down to the nitty gritty... firstly, what is "rooting" & why is it necessary/desirable to "root" a phone, for some apps & not others?
What "powers"/level of control, does it actually unlock??

    2. What is & please tell me more, about "custom ROM"!!! What does that do?? Sounds interesting!! :D

& 3. What is a "Bootloader" & what does it do/prevent the phone from doing, with &/or without one?

I feel like an "icing nerd"... (only educated in the first few layers) ...I am keen as, to learn as much as you "cake chef nerds"!! :D

    My analogies, rule!!! ;) haha

I am currently saving, to buy the Z3mini (outright), in December. I have no doubt that it will more than suffice, my needs - unrooted, I am simply curious.

Thank you, for anything anyone can/does tell me.

    CHEERS!! ;)

Anonym, 06 Oct 2014None of that applies here. We are licensed users, not compe... moreAny competitor can buy the phone just as well as you or anyone else. And they should too, if they want to compete.

Would you like a competitor to get their hands on your proprietary code that you spent millions to develop and fine-tune, which is also a big selling point on your product? I totally understand this, and if you're someone who necessarily NEEDS to root and unlock their phone, then just go for another phone.

And what comes to licensing, Sony doesn't license you their software or any code whatsoever. The phone is sold as is, as a phone. They're not selling you their proprietary code, which means you have no rights for it, other than using the phone.

Quantify, 06 Oct 2014Just because you bought a phone doesn't give you the right ... moreNone of that applies here. We are licensed users, not competitors.
Licenses are contractual obligations which (should they have restrictions) need to be written in a contract.

I see the use of those features advertised everywhere in the box, sadly the restrictions imposed to those features (which I am paying for) is only buried in the oblivion of a long Terms and Conditions -- which I don't get to see unless I buy and open the box of the phone, putting me in the no return zone.

            Now THAT'S the problem buddy.

Just because you bought a phone doesn't give you the right to access or copy intellectual property. Sony is completely within their rights to protect their IP with DRM. Nobody is preventing you from writing your own code instead.
