WhatsApp beta for Android is testing better privacy controls for status updates

Peter, 11 June 2024

Back in 2017 WhatsApp unveiled the Status feature, which allowed users to post text, emojis, photos and more that would be visible to their contacts for 24 hours. But not necessarily all contacts – the Status Privacy setting allowed users to pick between status updates being visible to all contacts, only select contacts or everyone but select contacts.

Last month, WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.10.10.75 added a little popup that allowed you to easily change the Status Update Privacy setting before posting a new update. This brings us to today and WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.12.27, which is rolling out with the same feature.

If nothing else, this is a reminder of the current status of the privacy setting, so you won’t forget to change it. And if it needs changing, you don’t have to go into the settings to do so. This will make users more cognizant of who will see their update.

If you’re on the beta channel, you might see this feature. Or not, it will be rolling out to more testers over the next few days.

Try using it again. Signal is much better now. More stable. I've been using it since 2019

signal drains battery 1% every minute if you use it all time. plus RAM usage is more. whatsapp is battery efficient.
