Samsung Galaxy Watches will get family health tracking

Vlad, 01 July 2024

According to a teardown of the code inside the latest version of Samsung's Health app, the company is planning to add a useful new feature to its smartwatches soon. You will be able to monitor health data collected by a smartwatch for a child or other family member on your smartphone.

To get things started, there will of course be an approval process in place that allows one Samsung account to process the health data for other accounts. There are privacy and security checks built in so that this feature can't be abused. Any member of a family group will be able stop sharing their data or change what and how much they share at any time. Access to a child's health info will also require consent from a legal guardian.

Shared data will be automatically deleted, and the sharing permission will be rescinded if there is an extended period of inactivity, and then you'll have to go through the whole approval process again. To keep the data populated over time, your child or other relative will need to wear their Galaxy Watch constantly.

It's easy to speculate that this feature will debut on the upcoming Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra, which are due to become official next week, on July 10. However, there's nothing stopping Samsung from bringing this to older smartwatch models too, so let's hope that happens with the One UI 6 Watch update.

Samsung will surely never bring this to Watch 3 for example. What do you mean by older ones? 4 and 5 ? Those are not that old

Nice feature glad it's not debuting on 6 Classic and it seems optional.
