Huawei Y7 Prime (2018) in for review

Huawei Y7 Prime (2018) - a device for the young or at least those unable or unwilling to spend too much cash, but want a big screen and cool portrait photos.

The this year's Y7 Prime boasts a 5.99-inch IPS display with a trendy 18:9 aspect ratio and a cost-saving HD+ (720 x 1440 px) resolution. The screen doesn't look bad, though - it's perfectly usable even if it's not the sharpest around.

Due to its flat back, slim profile and rather thick side bezels, the Huawei Y7 Prime (2018) might be a bit hard to handle for those with regular to small hands. Still, this is a budget device, so we can't expect flawless design solutions. And on the upside there's no notch on the screen.

The back is made of plastic - somewhat of a rarity these days even for budget devices. It hosts the fingerprint sensor, which is positioned just a tad higher than we would like, and the dual camera setup - 13MP main unit and a 2MP one for depth sensing.

The front accommodates an 8MP camera for video calls and selfies.

The slightly outdated entry-level Snapdragon 430 is behind the wheel and due to its old 28nm manufacturing process, the 3,000 mAh battery might not last as long as we would have liked. However, we know better than to write a phone off before we've completed its actual battery life test.

The specs highlights include a decent amount of RAM for its price - 3GB and 32GB of expandable internal storage. The good thing about the latter is that it doesn't take away the second SIM slot - you can still stick inside two SIM cards and a microSD.

The phone runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with Huawei's EMUI 8.0 on top, so we wonder if the Snapdragon 430 will play nicely with that. The Y7 Prime (2018) costs just €170, but that doesn't mean it's going to be forgiven for not delivering a reasonably smooth experience.

A real gem on the cheap or an entry level device full of compromises? Stay tuned for the full review to find out.
