All 2014 Qualcomm-based Sony handsets have AOSP builds

16 December, 2014

Sony now has AOSP builds available for its entire lineup of Qualcomm-based smartphones. The company accomplished the feat by adding Sony Xperia E3 and Xperia T3 to the open device project today.

The source code for Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia M2 was also updated today. It features improved stability for both devices.

In order to start creating their own version of AOSP, users should download the Android 4.4 KitKat software binaries and follow the build instructions. Tinkerers must be aware of the limitations of the software - key hardware components such as camera and modem are not working.

Sony surely deserves a hat tip for offering this type of support for its lineup of smartphones. Here’s hoping that more major manufacturers will follow its example in similar fashion.
