Canon announces EOS C700 Cinema camera

Prasad, 01 September, 2016

Canon has announced its flagship camera in its Cinema EOS series of cameras, the EOS C700. With a camera of this scope, there is a lot to talk about, but here are some of the highlights.

Two new 4K sensor options. The C700 and C700 PL have a 4.5K rolling shutter CMOS sensor with 15 stops of dynamic range. This option also includes Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology for quick autofocus. Alternatively, you can opt for the C700 GS PL variant that comes with a 4.5K global shutter CMOS sensor that has a slightly lower 14 stops of dynamic range and no Dual Pixel CMOS AF.

Modular design makes it easy to connect accessories to the top and bottom of the C700. Cheese plates on the top and bottom with multiple threaded holes makes it easy to attach accessories such as a top handle or a shoulder mount.

Built-in 0.7-inch OLED EVP with 1080p resolution, surround view, view assist, false colors, and HDR simulation.

Built-in side display on the left with six function buttons assigned to ISO, shutter, slow motion, aperture, color, and white balance. You can also attach an optional Remote Operation Unit OU-700 on the right that mirrors the functionality of the display on the left for access from the right.

The camera supports RAW recording in 4K up to 120fps, 2K RAW up to 240fps, or ProRes 4K up to 60fps. You can opt for Canon Codex Recorder CDX-36150 that includes an integrated 1 or 2TB storage for high bit-rate 4K recording. Alternatively you can opt to use the built-in dual CFast card slots and record in XF-AVC 4K video at 59.94fps, either individually or simultaneously to both cards. There is also an SD slot for 8-bit 4:2:0 Proxy XF-AVC files.

The C700 supports Canon Log 2 and Log 3. Log files allow you to capture the full dynamic range of the sensor, recording a flat image that needs to be color graded but provides far superior dynamic range and color control. You can choose Log 2 for the full 15 stop dynamic range with a longer workflow or Log 3 with reduced 14 stop dynamic range but shorter workflow.

C700 also includes a 5 stop mechanical ND filter as well as support for anamorphic lenses.

The EOS C700 and C700 PL are priced at $35000 and the EOS C700 GS PL for $38000.

Maybe a typo should have been 1.6 million.

No doubt Canon will over charge for the camera and then slash there price. They are the worst offender of this practice.
