Google Home extra bases are now available, made from fabrics or metal

Vlad, 08 November 2016

The Google Home smart speaker with built-in Assistant became available last week, and starting today you can also pick up extra bases for it. The Home features a removable base - the part that covers the speakers. When you buy a Google Home, it comes with a light gray default base, but you now have the option of swapping this out for something more colorful.

Six options are up for grabs in the Google store. Three are made from fabrics, 33% nylon and 67% polyester to be precise. These are called Mango, Marine, and Violet, and you can see them on the left in the image below. The fabrics are covered with a hydrophobic and antimicrobial coating for your hygiene, but also in order for them not to degrade in time because of humidity.

The metal options give you a painted steel plate on top of polycarbonate. These are called Carbon, Copper, and Snow, and they can be seen on the right in the image above. The fabric bases each cost $20, while if you want metal you'll need to shell out $40.

These look exactly like this air freshener i've been using for ages. It's called Renuzit Longlast Adjustable Air Freshener. Image search and you will see what I mean. When you peal the plastic it looks exactly like that.
