Spotify has been writing several terabytes of data to your computer’s hard drive for months

Prasad, 13 November 2016

According to a report by Ars Technica, Spotify has reportedly been writing huge amount of junk data to your computer’s storage for almost five months now.

The Spotify app for Windows, macOS, and Linux has been found to write hundreds of gigabytes of data to your computer, whether the app is being used or idle. It doesn’t actually store anything but the constant writing can wear down your storage device, especially if it is an SSD, which tend to have limited write cycles. This can significantly reduce the life of your storage devices and also increase power consumption.

The issue has been reported on reddit, Hacker News, and other online forums. After Ars contacted Spotify, the company eventually responded saying an update has been released (1.0.42) that supposedly takes care of the problem, however, it wasn’t available for testing at the time of writing.

If you don’t want further assault on your computer’s storage device, you should update as soon as possible or hold off on using the app until then.
