Samsung unveils Galaxy A3 (2017), A5 (2017) and A7 (2017)

Chip, 02 January 2017

Samsung kicked off the year by making the three often leaked members of its 2017 A series official. The Galaxy A7 (2017), Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A3 (2017) were expected to debut on January 5 at a dedicated event in Malaysia, but the company’s global press site listed them today.

All three new handsets come with IP68 certification for water and dust resistance and sport fingerprint scanners in their home buttons. They run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and support Samsung Pay and LTE connectivity. The metal bodies are just 7.9mm thick and they all have USB Type-C connectors.

The most interesting member of the lineup is the 5.7” Galaxy A7 (2017), which comes with a FullHD Super AMOLED screen as well as a 1.9GHz Octa-core CPU and 3GB of RAM on an Exynos chipset. It comes with a 16MP primary camera and a 16MP selfie snapper, both featuring bright F/1.9 lenses. Storage is 32GB and is further expandable via a microSD card slot.

The Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017) is powered by a 3,600 mAh battery with Fast charging support. It will be available in Black, Blue, Pink and Gold color options.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017)

The middle member of the new trio, Galaxy A5 (2017) comes with a 5.2” Super AMOLED screen of the same 1080p resolution. It also has the same Exynos 7880 chipset with 8 Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.9GHz and 3GB of RAM. The 32GB storage is once again expandable via a microSD slot.

The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) has another couple of 16MP cameras, one for each side but it loses the F/1.9 fast aperture. Battery capacity has also been dropped to 3,000mAh, but the Fast charging is still here. Color options are once more Black, Blue, Pink and Gold.

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017)

The Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) is the smallest of the bunch, sporting a 4.7” Super AMOLED display of 720p resolution. It has a slightly slower 1.6GHz octa-core CPU and the cameras are also of comparably lower resolution – 13MP at the back and 8MP at the front. Both snappers come with F/1.9 apertures, much like the Galaxy A7 (2017).

RAM has been dropped to 2GB and internal storage is halved at 16GB. The smaller size also meant only a 2,350mAh battery can fit, while Fast Charging is nowhere to be seen. Colors are, once more, Black, Blue, Pink and Gold.

The Galaxy A (2017) trio will be available in Russia in early-January and will be expanded to global markets later on. Pricing is yet to be detailed.
