Weekly poll: Best smartphone at IFA

Peter, 03 September 2017

The bustle of IFA 2017 is dying down, all the major announcements came and went. You can check our recap in case you missed anything and we have hands-on impressions from all the major players if you need to delve deeper.

But let's look at the cream of the crop. Which phone do you think stole the show?

LG V30 Sony Xperia XZ1 Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Motorola Moto X4
LG V30 • Sony Xperia XZ1 • Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact • Motorola Moto X4

The LG V30 is a marked improvement over the G6. The 6" P-OLED screen looks amazing, but it doesn't make the phone too big - in fact, it's more compact than the V20. We'll want more time with the new dual camera, but LG flagships have consistently been strong performers in this field. Now, if only we can get some official word on pricing.

The Sony Xperia XZ1 brings the 5.2" line to parity with the XZ Premium. No, no 4K screen, but the 1080p HDR screen is pleasing to the eye. And we finally get a proper flagship chipset, something the X series has struggled with. Not to mention that the XZ1 duo will be the first phones to launch with Android 8.0 Oreo.

The other part of the pair being the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact. Hurrah, the Compact line lives again! We get the familiar 4.6" 720p screen (HDR would have been nice) and the full fat Snapdragon 835 chipset. This time around Sony even left in the full amount of RAM (though storage was halved compared to the XZ1).

The Motorola Moto X4 is the most affordable of this quartet, but it doesn't shy away from a fight. Its metal and glass body is IP68 waterproof like the Xperias and the LG. The dual camera has a wide-angle lens like the V30 as well. The chipset is a bit of a letdown, Snapdragon 630, but it has enough oomph to record 2160p video and will offer great battery life. Plus, even the V30 can't send audio to 4 Bluetooth devices simultaneously.
