Best Buy stops selling full price iPhone X and iPhone 8 after pricing backlash

Vlad, 31 October 2017

Last week Best Buy was caught overpricing the iPhone X and iPhone 8 units bought outright, without a carrier's monthly installment plan. If you wanted the handset and nothing more, you had to pay $100 extra compared to Apple's prices. That obviously resulted in online backlash against the company, because such a practice was deemed unfair.

In response to that backlash, Best Buy has now decided to simply stop selling the newest iPhones outright. Yes, instead of lowering the prices to the Apple-recommended levels, the retailer is taking a stand and now only offers the iPhone X and iPhone 8 with carrier installment plans. If you want to buy either device outright, you need to look elsewhere.

And it's not that you don't have any other choices, of course. Apple itself and many other retailers stick to the recommended pricing, which makes Best Buy's actions rather weird. Anyway, the decision to charge a premium for the non-carrier activated phones was intentional, because apparently offering different purchasing options "has a cost" - by which Best Buy means it's not actively making any money from carriers when it's selling you a handset upfront.

But it's ok for Apple to do it, by charging over $1000 for an animated emoji machine ?

I work in a Verizon Wireless store. We purchase any iPhone at $10 above the cost what apple sells for retail. If we sell iPhones at apples suggested price, we lose money. The only way we make money is by signing customers up for the device payment. F...
