DisplayMate publishes results of iPhone X testing

DisplayMate has published its results of testing the iPhone X display and has called it the best smartphone display on the market.

The company specializes in making professional grade software for display calibration and also routinely publishes test results for popular devices on the market for the benefit of consumers, journalists and manufacturers.

Over the years Apple has had some of the highest rated displays on the market but it was usually Samsung who took the cake in terms of having the best smartphone display on the market in that particular year. This year, Apple has leapfrogged Samsung in the DisplayMate results.

Here are some notes from the article, which is worth reading in its entirety.

• The iPhone X display has the most accurate display of any phone DM has ever tested. In their own words, "It is the most color accurate display that we have ever measured. It is visually indistinguishable From perfect, and is very likely considerably better than any mobile display, monitor, TV or UHD TV that you have." The display targets sRGB and DCI-P3 and accurately hits both.

• The iPhone X display has the highest brightness for OLED smartphones, maxing out at 634 nits. The Galaxy Note8 in comparison goes up 423 nits with manual brightness and 560 nits in auto brightness. This results in a more readable display under bright sunlight.
• The iPhone X display uses a diamond sub-pixel layout, which puts the individual red, green and blue subpixels in a 45-degree tilted diamond layout for better anti-aliasing while displaying diagonal lines. It's identical to the one used by the Note8.

• The viewing angles are still impressive and there are only small deviances in brightness and color when viewed at an angle.
• The display can get as dim as 2 nits without sacrificing color accuracy. Usually LCD maintain their colors even at low brightness since the brightness is a factor of the backlight but OLEDs occasionally tend to shift colors at lower brightness levels, which isn't the case with the iPhone X.
• The display has one of the lowest reflectance DM has tested, making it easier to use in bright environments. It also works with polarized sunglasses in both, portrait and landscape orientations.
• DisplayMate concluded by saying that the iPhone X is 'the most innovative and high performance Smartphone display that we have ever tested'. They credited Samsung for the quality of the OLED panel but also pointed out that it was Apple's precise color calibration that got them the perfect scores. Essentially, Apple got higher scores with a Samsung display than what Samsung gets with its own displays.
