Razer Phone to get HDR and 5.1 support on Netflix in an update

Prasad, 10 January 2018

Razer has announced that it has partnered with Netflix to bring HDR-10 and 5.1 audio support to the Razer Phone. While there exist phones that can playback content in HDR on Netflix, the Razer Phone will be the first mobile device to get 5.1 audio support.

In an update arriving later this month, new and existing users will get the option to watch Netflix in HDR. This was a bit of a surprise since Razer never mentioned support for HDR previously but apparently the Razer Phone does have an HDR-10 display, although I'm not sure if that means you can play local HDR videos or HDR videos on YouTube, before or even after the update.

As for the 5.1 part, the update will allow you to listen to the 5.1 stream that Netflix optionally offers on compatible devices on select titles. Of course, since the phone will only ever be used with stereo speakers, whether it's the ones built-into the phone or a pair of headphones connected through the THX-certified dongle, it will just be a fake surround effect created using discrete audio channels but then played using two speakers. Still, it should provide a bit more immersion, assuming it's done properly.

Users will need the four-person 4K plan to watch content in HDR, which is utter nonsense as the HDR is resolution independent but that's just how Netflix rolls.

It's most likely a 6+2 bit panel. It's sad to see tech companies keep diluting "standards" just to sell products.

It's a little bit better and with less noise. But not drastically much better. Oneplus and Nokia still does it better.

I can't wait for the update that imports a subwoofer into the mate 10 pro. And makes stereo speakers become surround speakers. Wait, isn't there apps that gives emulated 5.1 sound, on play store? I thought so. Anyway, sound still aren't as good as on...
