Samsung's Metal 12 magnesium alloy coming to phones and watches too

The Samsung Notebook 9 (2018) launched with a new material dubbed Metal 12. A trademark filing at EUIPO suggests that this magnesium allow will be used for phones, watches, mobile accessories and even home appliances.

The new Notebook 9 weighs 1kg (2.2lbs), which puts this 13.3” laptop in the featherweight category. Much of this is attributed to the Metal 12. Samsung describes the material as “incredibly light, yet unbelievably strong”.

Samsung's Metal 12 magnesium alloy coming to phones and watches too

Way back there was a rumor that the Galaxy S7 will have a magnesium alloy frame, but those rumors did not pan out (in the end, a more traditional aluminum frame was used). The company hasn't said much about how Metal 12 compares to aluminum 7000 used in latter phones (including the Note8).

Sciency note: magnesium has an atomic number 12, hence the name of the alloy.

becarefull of magnesium, it can easily burn

I hate glass backed phones with a passion. Filthy. Smear ridden grease traps they are. Pixel had the right mix. Mostly metal, good blend.

I tried cases long ago. I would never use any again. I applaud manufacturers who come up with appropriate housing materials.
