The Garmin vivoactive 3 Music has storage for 500 songs

Garmin is following up on the Forerunner 645 Music (a $450 watch) with the vivoactive 3 Music – a $300 watch. Both earn their name thanks to the built-in storage for 500 songs that you can take with you on a run, no phone needed.

You can transfer the music files from your computer or download them from iHeartRadio (Deezer support is coming soon). Then you need to pair some sweat-proof headphones and head out.

The Garmin vivoactive 3 Music has a built-in GPS receiver to track your exercises. With GPS tracking and music playing, the battery will last 5 hours. In smartwatch mode, the battery is good for 7 days.

Garmin has pre-loaded the watch with 15 tracking apps that cover everything from yoga to strength training. You can also check AccuWeather before you leave and track when your Lyft and Uber ride arrives. When outside, you can use Garmin Pay to buy coffee and snacks and when you get back home, the SmartThings integration will let you control smart devices at home.

As for the watch itself, it has a 43.1 mm polymer case and weighs 39g. It uses 20 mm bands, official ones cost 30 bucks. The watch is rated for swimming (5 ATM) and has a heart rate sensor plus VO2 max tracking. Additional sensors include altimeter, thermometer, compass, gyro and accelerometer.

The vivoactive 3 doesn’t run Android Wear, but instead uses a proprietary Garmin platform. You can check notifications from your phone and control the company’s VIRB action cameras.

The Garmin vivoactive 3 Music is available today in Black/Stainless steel only and costs $300. The non-music vivoactive 3 watch has dropped to $250.
