Instagram introduces “you’re all caught up” feature

Enrique, 02 July 2018

Instagram just introduced a new feature that will let you know when you’re caught up with all posts from the last two days. The Facebook-owned photo sharing platform will show you a “You’re all caught up” message once you’re totally up to date. Is this really how Instagram scrollers are using the platform though?

We’ve heard that it can be difficult to keep track of your seen posts. With this message, you’ll have a better understanding of your Feed and know you haven’t missed recent photos or videos. - Instagram

We are very skeptical about this “feature”. Instagram changed to a non-chronological algorithm a while back and the complaints remain the same: users want to be able to view their timeline chronologically rather than scroll endlessly until a post they’d like to see randomly pops up.

If we’re honest, we fail to see exactly how this feature will give us a “better understanding of your feed”. If Instagram really wanted us to understand our timeline, it would give us at least the option to see our timelines in chronological order with some suggested posts along the way. Rather, it releases some bogus feature and calls it helpful.

We really do understand Instagram’s reason for keeping an algorithm-based timeline: it boosts engagement between users and the accounts they want to see most while keeping the users engaged in the app for longer amounts of time. The downside is that Instagram has prioritized monetization and engagement over user experience.

Currently, the algorithm curates each Instagrammer’s feed based on likes and engagement. Those whose posts you like and comment on regularly will be among the first to appear at the top of your feed. So do keep this in mind while you’re scrolling endlessly because all you see are day-old posts at the top of your feed.

If you disagree with us, please let us know! We'd love to hear from you guys and your thoughts on the new feature and Instagram's algorithm.
