Xiaomi also increases the prices of its products in India

Yordan, 12 November 2018

Last week Realme stopped offering its devices on their initial promo prices, announced at Flipkart and Amazon India. This weekend Xiaomi followed through with the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A, along with two of its Mi LED TVs and a 10,000 mAh power bank.

Manu Kumar Jain, director of Xiaomi India, took it to Twitter to announce the reason, and it is the same as the one given by Madhav Sheth, CEO of Realme - the price of the Indian rupee is falling, and the company has to adjust the pricing to the production costs.

The Xiaomi Redmi 6 smartphone with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage was announced last week with a price tag of INR7,999. Now the device can be purchased for INR8,499. The cheaper Redmi 6A got a similar increase of at least INR500 - the 2/16 GB version is now INR6,599, while the 2/32 GB option costs INR7,499.

Both phones were advertised as “Made for India by Indians,” but since most of the components are imported, their production cost still went up. Xiaomi, as Realme, is relying heavily on affordable handset sales and that’s why only the cheapest products have a new price tag.
