OnePlus 5G smartphone to mark the start of a whole new lineup

Yordan, 12 November 2018

Pete Lau, OnePlus CEO, announced plans for a 5G smartphone back in the summer. At the Hong Kong 4G/5G summit, hosted by Qualcomm, his co-founder Carl Pei said the company is on schedule for an early 2019 launch and we expected that the phone might be the OnePlus 7 (or whatever the OnePlus 6T successor is named).

Apparently this isn’t the case, as reported by as a OnePlus spokesperson announced the 5G device will not be a successor of the OnePlus 6T and will most likely arrive in a different category with a higher price tag.

According to the report, OnePlus 6T will have a successor, but it won’t be 5G-enabled in order to keep a relatively lower price, compared with other smartphones with similar specs. This means we might see two OnePlus phones launched together, something the company hasn’t done yet.

Name-wise, the spokesperson did not confirm if we might see names as OnePlus 7 or OnePlus 7T. There is also quite early to know if the company will be ready to announce the 5G device at MWC in February or we should wait for a separate event.

With the 6T, the camera is comparable to the 'true' flagships.
