vivo opens up the Android Pie beta for the NEX and X21 phones to all Chinese users

Peter, 02 January 2019

Just before the New Year celebrations kicked off, vivo launched a closed Android Pie beta for its recent flagships in China. That was limited to just 5,000 participants, however.

Starting today, the limit has been lifted and everyone who wants in can download the recruitment app and install the latest version of Funtouch OS. Head here for more details (again, this is limited to China). You have until January 6 to join.

The update is available for the following phones:

vivo X21 vivo X21 UD vivo NEX S vivo NEX A
vivo X21 • vivo X21 UD • vivo NEX S • vivo NEX A

It's a hefty download, 2.71GB in size. Here's the changelog. In short, the UI switches to a flat look and multiple smart features are added (many revolving around the Jovi virtual assistant).

If we're reading things right, this second stage of beta testing will end on January 8, meaning that a stable version of the Android 9 Pie software will start rolling out very soon (assuming the new beta testers don't find any issues).

That's why it's only for Chinese users. Probably they known already that they can't complain.

From December 28th to January 8th... That's not very long for a beta test.
