Huawei Mate 20 Pro's AI finishes a symphony from two centuries ago

Peter, 29 January 2019

Schubert wrote two movements of his Symphony No. 8 back in 1822, but left it unfinished. Huawei has decided that 197 years of waiting is long enough and has tapped into the AI powers of the Mate 20 Pro to deliver the final two movements.

The dual NPU of the phone was used to analyze the timbre, pitch and meter of the existing movements in order to generate a melody for the next two. That melody was then used by Emmy award-winning composer Lucas Cantor to arrange an orchestral score.

The finished symphony will be performed live at Cadogan Hall in London on February 4. Until then, here’s a 30 second teaser of how the creative process went.

Lucas Cantor, Composer said: “My role was to draw out the AI’s good ideas and fill in the gaps to ensure the final output was ready to be played by a symphony orchestra. The result of this collaboration with AI proves that technology offers incredible possibilities and the significant and positive impact it can have on modern culture.”

So, Huawei, when is The Winds of Winter coming out? Schubert fans are not the only ones who know what it’s like to wait a couple of centuries for something to be finished.

This is just a PR stunt, nothing of a musical value. Composers do sometimes reintroduce themes from previous movements, but different movements have different themes, that’s why they are two different movements. Two different movements from a sa...

Perfect comment. You can predict some patterns but you will never hit original music as it would be intended by author, no one can

Been saying it since the rise of AI. You cant litteraly put AI capable processor in tiny device, you need hubdred servers for that, but you know Marketing will make sure random people will never know the truth.
