Oculus Rift S headset announced with higher-res displays

At GDC 2019, Oculus announced a new-generation Rift headset called the Oculus Rift S. The headset brings some new features and improvements that make the VR gaming experience more comfortable and safer.

Oculus said it worked closely with Lenovo to refine the Rift S’ hardware with feedback from the Lenovo Legion gaming community and Lenovo co-designed the Rift S’ hardware with Oculus for improved confirmed and better weight distribution. There’s also a single cable which makes it easier to manage and avoid cable clutter.

Like the Quest, the Rift S has Oculus Insight which can actively track the space around you so you don’t bump into anything. There is also Passthrough+, which is a new feature on the Oculus Rift S that acts as a passthrough to see the outside world and help keep you in the game and maximizes the available space you have. The Oculus Touch controllers have also been updated.

New to the Rift S is LCD with higher resolution 2560x1440 px screens However, the refresh rate drops from 90Hz to 80Hz, which won’t make a significant difference to the overall playing experience.

The Oculus Rift S will be available for $399 and will become officially available this spring. To be clear, this Oculus headset requires a connected to a PC to operate.
