Oppo will update the Reno 10x zoom to support 60x digital zoom

Peter, 07 May 2019

The Oppo Reno 10x zoom was announced with “only” 20x digital zoom capability, but the company is preparing an update that will triple the range – up to 60x zoom! Check out the video below for a quick demo of what’s to come. This update will be rolled out in Taiwan first.

This requires a bit of explanation. The phone comes with a periscope zoom lens that goes up to 130mm focal length – 5x zoom in relation to the main camera. Then there’s the hybrid zoom mode that can go up to 10x (hence the phone’s name).

This is followed by a digital zoom, currently capped at 20x. With the new maximum magnification of 60x, the camera will go up to 1,560mm focal length. For comparison, the Huawei P30 Pro has a 125mm periscope lens and up to 50x digital zoom, which works out to 1,250mm focal length.

So, the Reno will offer a closer look. As for image quality at such extreme magnification, that remains to be tested. In the meantime, check out our camera samples and early impressions from the Reno 10x zoom, plus the quick Q&A session about focal lengths.
