OnePlus 7 Pro has a "record setting impressive" screen according to DisplayMate

Vlad, 14 May 2019

As teased a couple of weeks ago, today DisplayMate has published its full in-depth review of the OnePlus 7 Pro's 90Hz QHD+ Fluid AMOLED screen. And also as teased, it turns out it's one of the best panels ever put in a phone, receiving DisplayMate's highest A+ display rating.

In the company's own words, "the OnePlus 7 Pro has a very impressive excellent world class smartphone display", "one of the most innovative and highest performance" it's ever tested, setting or matching a whopping 10 smartphone display performance rating records.

These are: highest absolute color accuracy (0.8 JNCD); highest image contrast accuracy and intensity scale accuracy (2.20 Gamma); smallest change in peak brightness with the image content APL (1%); smallest shift in color accuracy with the image content APL (0.3 JNCD); smallest shift in image contrast and intensity scale with the image content APL (0.00); largest native color gamut (111% DCI-P3 and 140% sRGB/Rec.709); highest contrast ratio (nominally infinite because it's an OLED); lowest screen reflectance (4.6%); smallest brightness variation with viewing angle (22% at 30 degrees); highest visible screen resolution (3120x1440) - DisplayMate says 4K does not appear visually sharper on a smartphone.

The OnePlus 7 Pro got very good to excellent ratings in all but one of the DisplayMate lab test and measurement categories. The one "good" rating came for the color shift of blue at a 30 degree viewing angle, which is 5.9 JNCD. That hasn't influenced the phone's overall mark because blue region color shifts are less visually noticeable than red and green.

DisplayMate goes on to say that the OnePlus 7 Pro has a screen with close to textbook perfect calibration accuracy and performance that is visually indistinguishable from perfect. It joins the Samsung Galaxy S10, the Apple iPhone XS Max, and the Google Pixel 3 XL in this select club, sharing a concurrent DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display award with them.

All of these are excellent screens, each is better in some performance categories, but none is best in all of them. So in the end buying any of these handsets will guarantee that what you're looking at when using them is one of the best displays ever put in a phone.
