Oppo Reno 10x zoom in for review

Oppo says its Reno series is about “seeing the world from a completely new perspective” and the Reno 10x zoom is the de-facto flagship of the compny.

If you didn’t guess by now, the 10x stands for the phone’s hybrid zoom capabilities but it's limited to 5x optical despite what the name implies.

Another cool quirk is the motorized shark fin selfie camera which helps it stand out in the sea of pop-up and punch hole solutions but we’re not quite sure of the practicality here. The Reno 10x zoom is a substantial phone with all the bells and whistles that 2019 has to offer so let's go through a brief rundown before we give it the full review treatment.

Front and center is the 6.6-inch AMOLED display with its FHD+ resolution and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Like other flagships, you’re getting an in-display fingerprint sensor, which is among the fastest we’ve seen so far. The bezels are basically non-existent with the exception of the chin, which is slightly more pronounced.

The selfie cam features a 16MP f/2.0 wide sensor. The choice of a complicated pop-up mechanism is a bold move and raises some concern but Oppo claims it was tested to 200,000 actuations so that should be more than enough to last its lifetime.

We dig the matte finish on the back as it helps keep the phone smudge free. The dual glass design is reinforced with the latest Gorilla Glass 6 protection on the front and the older 5th generation one around the back.

The rear houses the triple camera setup with the main 48MP f/1.7 Sony IMX586 sensor paired with the 13MP f/3.0 telephoto and 8MP f/2.2 ultra wide sensors. You’ll be able to go up to 5x for optical zoom while anything above that will resort to a digital boost.

The internals are headlined by the Snapdragon 855 processor paired with up to 8GB RAM and your choice of 128 or 256GB storage, which unfortunately isn’t expandable. For what it's worth, the device is one of the top devices on AnTuTu’s benchmark so performance should be solid.

The 4,065 mAh battery inside the phone is reassuring and can be topped up with the included 20W VOOC Flash charger although Oppo does have a faster 50W Super VOOC that it supplies with RX17 Pro.
