Apple doubles the storage on the Mac mini

Prasad, 18 March 2020

Apple today announced that it is doubling the storage on the Mac mini. The computer now comes with 256GB for the base $799 configuration while the $1,099 model comes with 512GB. And that's basically it.

To say that Apple announced this would be a bit of an understatement. The news about the Mac mini was basically a footnote to the MacBook Air announcement. And that makes sense, when you consider there's not much here to talk about.

Apple doubles the storage on the Mac mini

But the fact that even in 2020, the Mac mini still comes with outdated eight-generation Intel chips with 8GB of memory is laughable and the doubling of storage does nothing to salvage that situation. The previous generation Mac mini (2014) got a reputation for basically being forgotten until Apple finally updated it after four years.

The 2018 model seems to be going down the same road and again, today's update does little to change that. The Mac mini used to be the affordable Mac that offered decent performance in a compact size. But now it has become the poster child for the 'overprized, outdated hardware' image that desktop Macs have acquired.

Just to remind you that apple said they will end using Intel processors by 2020

Not at all an Apple fanboy, but maybe, just maybe, this has more to do with Intel not being able to bring any innovation to the table, what with them being stuck on that ages old 14nm+++.... Process since Skylake eternity.
