Intel 10-gen H chips for gaming laptops are here, surpass 5GHz clock speed

Just two days after AMD showed off its Ryzen 4000 series chips for laptops, Intel has made its 10th gen H chips for high-end gaming and content-creation laptops official.

These new i5, i7 and i9 chips are of the Comet Lake family and are built on the 14nm++ process (and not the 10nm Ice Lake, nor the 10nm+ Tiger Lake). They are all 45W and have 4 to 8 cores with double the threads.

The 10th gen Intel i7 and i9 H chips are the first mobile chips to surpass 5GHz boost clock, which is their biggest advantage over AMD's new Ryzen 4000-H chips - high-frequency cores are helpful in both gaming and applications that rely on single-threaded performance.

Intel uses what it calls Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB), which will boost the frequency by 200MHz if the CPU temperature is 65°C/149°F or lower.

Intel has already unveiled and deployed its U and Y series 10th gen chips to various devices (like the new Apple MacBook Air). These H series chips will also have intergrated Wi-Fi 6 support as well as Thunderbolt 3 support.

The new 10th gen H series chips will make their way to laptops from ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI and others in the coming weeks.
