T-Mo's LG Velvet runs Geekbench, offers first glimpse at Dimensity 1000C's performance

Peter, 09 September 2020

The LG Velvet 5G for T-Mobile is the first smartphone powered by a Dimensity chipset outside of China. Specifically, it uses the Dimensity 1000C, a brand new chip that is branded as part of the flagship 1000-series. Does it have the performance to match that branding, though?

The first Geekbench result can begin to answer that question by showing what the CPU is capable of. It features four Cortex-A77 cores, which are exclusive to the 1000 chips while the 800 and 700 models use A76.

ARM claims that the A77 is 20% faster than the A76 at equal clock speed. Which is 2.0 GHz in the case of the Dimensity 1000C, matching the clock speed of the A76 in the Dimensity 800. For comparison, the vanilla 1000 runs its A77 cores at 2.6 GHz, the lower binned 1000L at 2.2 GHz.

If we compare it to the Honor X10 Max result we see only an 11% increase in single-core performance. The increase in multi-core performance is closer to 8%.

Of course, the Dimensity 1000C has an extra ace up its sleeve – the Mali-G57 GPU has an extra core compared to the 800 chip, theoretically giving it 25% more performance (more or less, depending on clock speed). Note that the other Dimensity 1000 chips use the more powerful G77 graphics core, however.

Anyway, T-Mobile’s LG Velvet will come with 6 GB of RAM as standard, which is par for the course in the Velvet lineup.

The phone will be available tomorrow (you’ll find it on LG.com), the full price is $588 but you can break that down into 24 monthly installments of $24.50.
