OnePlus 8T: what to expect

The OnePlus 8T event on October 14 will be more of a celebration than a reveal – the company has revealed much about the phone already. All that info eked out over several weeks, so we’ve collected it all in one place in case you didn’t follow each daily teaser.

The big upgrade will be the charging – the Warp Charge 65 will be have more than double the power of the current 30T plug. Topping out at 65W, this power brick will be able to do a full 0-100% charge in 39 minutes.

Charging enough to last you through the day (0-58%) will take 15 minutes. The 8T will have a 4,500 mAh battery, by the way, as big as the current OnePlus 8 Pro. Another interesting detail is that the new charger will have a USB-C port (leaving the traditional USB-A behind) and will support USB Power Delivery up to 45W.

There will be no OnePlus 8T Pro, however, this year we’re only getting one T-upgrade. CEO Pete Lau posted that the 8 Pro is their annual flagship, so its owners won’t feel the need to upgrade after only 6 months.

But the 8T will be a worthwhile upgrade over the 8, besides the faster charging it will feature a 120Hz display (up from 90Hz). The display will retain its 6.55” diagonal and 1080p+ resolution, so the 8 Pro will still have an edge (120Hz display too, but 6.78” in size and with 1440p+ resolution).

OnePlus 8T

The new panel on the 8T already received an A+ rating from DisplayMade and promises an impressive 1,000 nits of peak brightness with 8,192 brightness levels. The display will be highly accurate too, with “Just Noticeable Color Difference” of 0.3.

There isn’t much official info on the camera, but the expectations are for a 48MP main sensor, 16MP ultra wide, 5MP macro and 2MP depth. In other words, a slight upgrade over the Nord camera (which is the same, save for the 8MP ultrawide module).

The phone will launch with Android 11 out of the box, one of the first phones to do so (the new Pixels aren’t even out yet). The chipset is expected to be a Snapdragon 865+, bringing a 10% performance boost to the CPU and GPU. As for memory, 8/128 GB and 12/256 GB are the likely options.

Official images show a new aquamarine color for the OnePlus 8T. Compared to the vanilla 8, the T-phone will be slightly thicker (8.4 mm vs. 8.0 mm) and heavier (188g vs. 180g).

By the way, if you don’t like the color – or are just a die-hard fan of the classic OnePlus sandstone – there will be a limited edition OnePlus Nord unveiled during the 8T event.

There’s a very good chance that we’ll see the OnePlus Buds Z and Buds Wireless Z Bass Edition during that event.

The big question that remains is price – we’ve only heard rumors so far. It will likely be higher than the €700 price tag of the OnePlus 8 (€650 currently) and certainly below €900 of the 8 Pro. The rumors we mentioned claimed €800 for 8/128 GB and €900 for 12/256 GB.
