Google says Pixel 5’s screen gap has no impact on water resistance

If you recall, we reported on a situation where a number of Pixel 5 owners reported a visible gap between the frame and display of their barely new devices. We can confirm that our Pixel 5 review unit didn’t have this issue, but 9to5Google was not as lucky.

The outlet reports its interaction with Google Support to identify the manufacturing issue where the Pixel 5 showed a visible gap between the frame and the display. The gap is enough to collect dust and to cause concern since the device is rated for IP68 water resistance.

[…] We’ve had a chance to investigate units from customers and combines with your quality control data from the factory, we can confirm that the variation in clearance between the body and the display is a normal part of the design of your Pixel 5. There is no effect on the water and dust resistance or functionality of your phone. – Google Community Specialist

Google insists the gap is a normal variation of the manufacturing process between devices. Although Google insists this is ‘normal’, it has also said that it would “work with customers on an individual basis to address any concern they may have,”.

Google isn’t admitting fault but has also said it was willing to work with customers concerns. If you have a gap in the Pixel 5, you should certainly reach out to Google and see if they would offer a replacement device. Based on its response, it’s assumed that it may help you get a replacement device.
