Huawei Watch 3 is reportedly coming soon with revamped HarmonyOS and eSIM

Peter, 07 April 2021

The Huawei Watch 2 came out in 2017 with Google Wear OS, but since then the company has shifted its focus to the Watch GT series, which runs its own in-house software. We may finally get a sequel, though. According to a leakster on Weibo, the Huawei Watch 3 will arrive in May (well, in May at the earliest).

It won’t run Google’s software, of course. Interestingly, it won’t use the same LiteOS we’ve seen on the GT watches either.

Instead it will run HarmonyOS with a brand new UI. Also, it will support more third-party apps, something currently lacking in the GT series. This model will focus on advanced AI features and may have a shorter battery life (in our review we found that the Watch GT 2 lasts around 8 days).

The interface appears different from the HarmonyOS watch demo we saw in September last year. At least the design language of the icons is different.

The Huawei Watch 3 will also have an eSIM, just like the Watch 2 Pro (the standard Watch 2 had a nano-SIM slot). This will set it apart from the GT series, which lacks mobile data connectivity. Also, the Watch 3 will feature WeChat support with the ability to reply – with text or using your voice (to send a voice message or dictate to the speech-to-text engine).

The Huawei P50 series may have been delayed to June, that launch even may serve as a venue to unveil the new smartwatch too. Like the watch, the P50 series will launch with HarmonyOS out of the box.
