Samsung showcases several foldable displays ahead of SID 2021 exhibition

Michail, 17 May 2021

Ahead of this week’s Society for Information Display (SID) exhibition, Samsung Display teased several of its upcoming foldable OLED panels. We get a sneak peek at the brand’s S-foldable panel as well as a slidable option and a large screen panel for laptops with a built-in camera under the panel. The conference will span from today until May 21.

The S-foldable screen folds at two points, giving you the flexibility to adjust the desired screen real estate on the fly depending on the task at hand. The screen diagonal expands up to 7.2-inches when fully opened but there’s also a more managable form factor with just one unfold. The front-facing cameras are housed in the left hand side bezel of the display.

In addition, we get a look at the slidable display prototype which features a horizontally expanding display that also allows for gradual adjustment. In its unfolded state, the demo device appears around the same size as a conventional smartphone. With the press of a button, the screen can expand by several millimeters to present a larger canvas for multi-tasking and media consumption.

Samsung also showcased a 17-inch foldable display which folds in half similar to Microsoft’s Surface Neo tablet and Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Fold. The panel sports a 4:3 aspect ratio designed with productivity in mind. It can be used in both portrait and landscape orientations.

Lastly, we get a glimpse of Samsung’s plans for a nearly bezel-less laptop. The display features an integrated front-facing camera beneath the top bezel. The result is quite impressive and ensures a maximum screen real estate. The only question is if Samsung can work out the camera quality.

I will only consider foldable if there is no creases and half the current price. It is not like foldable reduces the thickness of device much.
