LG Pay will shut down through 2021 [Edit: November 1, 2021]

Enrique, 02 June 2021

Edit: Following the initial reporting of this story, LG issued a full statement and confirmed that the LG Pay service would officially be discontinued on November 1. Here's the statement:

We regret to inform you that the LG Pay Wallet service in the United States will be phasing out over the remainder of 2021 and discontinued on Nov. 1, 2021.

As we wind down over the coming months, you may notice that we will: stop accepting new enrollments to LG Pay; stop allowing the addition of new cards to existing accounts (Credit/Debit/Prepaid Card, Gift Card, Loyalty Card); and no longer allow the purchase of new gift cards. However, you will be able to use your existing provisioned cards until the LG Pay service is completely decommissioned.

In the interim, LG recommends that:

(a) if you have an LG Pay Perks Card with a remaining balance, you use your remaining funds prior to the LG Pay Service Termination; and

(b) if you have any gift cards in your LG Pay wallet to back them up for future use by saving the card number and pin outside of LG Pay.

As LG leaves the smartphone business, the company now announces the inevitable: it must shut down the payment service it launched for its own smartphones. The message is now visible on the LG Pay website.

Thank you for being a valued customer of LG Pay! We regret to inform you that LG Pay will be phasing out and discontinued over the remainder of 2021. More specific details will follow.

There’s no concrete date for LG Pay’s shutdown, but those using LG Pay can always switch to Google Pay on their LG handsets. The magnetic stripe feature that LG Phones supported on LG Pay would no longer be supported on Google Pay.

Although Samsung offered the same feature on its flagship smartphones for years, it no longer does so as of the Galaxy S21 series. NFC terminals are far more common now than they were back in 2015 when Samsung Pay first launched.

LG Pay will shut down through 2021

LG first launched its own payment service back in 2017 to rival Google and Samsung’s payment apps. In 2018, the service trickled down to newer mid-range devices and it was not until the summer of 2019 that the payment service would launch in the Unites States with support for magnetic stripe terminals.

more like Samsung's pay system it was mostly just an incentive to buy their phones hoping some day the service will work in your country, but for most of the world it never was and it never will.

I know : Had G3 and G4, plagued by bootlopp but fantastic devices et photo camera perfect for the time, even in low light given the F1.6 ! I still have somes of my bests shots with it. Even had V30 nut quality was decreasing and poor software support...

All they need was a good upper management who could make decisions on how to market their device. Their devices were really good in real use.
