TikTok confirmed to be testing Stories feature

Enrique, 05 August 2021

Following Twitter’s recent departure from its ‘stories’ feature it called “Fleets”, TikTok has confirmed that it is working on its own TikTok Stories in an email sent to The Verge. The feature was first discovered by Matt Navarra on Twitter and it is currently being piloted with a small number of users in markets outside of the US.

We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience[…] Currently we’re experimenting with ways to give creators additional formats to bring their creative ideas to life for the TikTok Community.” – TikTok spokesperson to The Verge

TikTok Stories isn’t meant to replace any other existing storytelling feature that TikTok already has like Duets, Live, and Stitch.

The Stories appear to work the same way in that they disappear after 24 hours, you can see who watched your Stories, and you can read through comments left on Stories. Stories won’t obstruct the current home screen, rather it’ll be accessed by swiping left from the main Feed, or by tapping on a person’s Avatar.

There’s no word on how long it would be in testing and there’s no launch date either. It will be interesting to see how TikTok will take the Stories feature and make it its own. The potential for engagement and ad space is huge, but if poorly implemented, it could end up like how Fleets did.
