Pixel 3 no longer gets unlimited Original quality storage on Google Photos for free

Yordan, 01 February 2022

Google announced the Pixel 3 back in October 2018 with the promise that the phones will have unlimited access to Google Photos for images in their original quality. The fine print said this feature will be over on January 31, 2022, and the time has finally come.

Owners of Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL phones still have unlimited upload with the “Storage saver” option that stores images in high quality.

Pixel 3 phones can no longer store images in Original quality on Google Photos for free

The end of free upload in original quality coincides with the promise of one final update, scheduled for “early this year”. Google promised the package will come in the first quarter of 2022.

Free Photos storage was one of the key selling points Google used to promote its Pixel phones in the past. The original Pixels still have that, while the 2017-born Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL access were axed at the end of 2020.

It is worth mentioning that users can still upload their images in original quality from any Pixel smartphone. The difference is now the files will be counted against their storage quota, and with the free tier being just 15 GB, it can fill up pretty quickly.
