Canalys: Samsung shipped 73.7 million smartphones globally in Q1 2022

Canalys released its full Q1 2022 global smartphone shipments report and the numbers show Samsung once again stood atop the charts. The South Korean conglomerate managed 73.7 million shipments during the January - March period and secured 24% of the global smartphone market share. A total of 311.2 million smartphones were shipped for the period which is 11% less than the same time last year.

Apple came in second place with 56.5 million shipments with an 18% market share while also boasting the only annual growth out of the top-five companies at 8%. Xiaomi (39.2 million), Oppo (29 million) and vivo (25.1 million) were the other top-five companies in terms of shipments.

The Chinese market suffered significant drops during the period with Xiaomi, Oppo and vivo all losing upwards of 20% of their shipment figures compared to the same time last year. Component shortages, ongoing COVID lockdowns and rising inflation all attributed to poor demand. Honor was the only brand that seemed to fare well during the period and claimed first place in terms of shipments with 15 million units sold.

The situation in Africa and the Middle East was not much better with Xiaomi shipments in both regions declining by 30%. North America was the only region to experience growth during the past quarter with Apple’s iPhone 13 series and Samsung’s Galaxy S22 trio leading the way. Looking ahead, analysts predict improvements in supply chains and a rebound in smartphone demand heading into the second half of the year.
