Huawei confirms that its partnership with Leica has ended

Peter, 23 May 2022

Earlier today Xiaomi announced a partnership with Leica, which spelled the end for the long lasting cooperation between the camera maker and Huawei (since 2016). The Chinese tech giant wrote “We can confirm that the cooperation between our two companies ended on 31 March” after being approached by Android Authority.

This means that the P50 and P50 Pro are the last Huawei phones with Leica cameras. The P50 Pocket skipped the Leica branding, despite launching in December last year (months before the partnership officially ended). This means that the Huawei Mate 50, whenever it may appear, will also go with an unbranded camera.

There were speculations as early as May last year that Leica was looking to jump ship after Huawei’s market share slid due to trade sanctions. Xiaomi and Honor were reported as the potential new partners and it seems that Xiaomi won in the end. The company’s first Leica phone is coming in July and will probably be the Xiaomi 12 Ultra.
